ABOUT MALAYSIA NAMAKKAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION
Background and Objectives
Residents of Namakkal District(formerly Known as Namakkal Taluk, Selam Dist)Tamil Naadu were brought to West Malaysia(then known as Malaya)by the British towards the end of 19th century and 20th Century to clear the jungle, work in the rubber plantations and to build roads.
The majority of the Namakkal people who were living in and around Kuala Lumpur were serving in the Public Works Dept and Central Electricty Board(now Tenaga National). In 1956 these people emulate the people of Namakkal who had formed Namakkal Taluk Welfare Association in Singapore in order to find solutions to their problems related to their members welfare, childrens education, culture, occupation, members socio-economy etc.
The first meeting was held on 11-3-1956 at the Indian Association Building Kampong Atap, Kuala Lumpur More than 100 descendants of Namakkal in and around Kuala Lumpur turned up for the meeting and formed the Namakkal Taluk Welfare Associaion. The founder members were Mr Sellamuthu, Mr Maruthu Gaunder, Mr Vaiyapuri Chettiar and a business man Mr Subramaniam Pillay.
Since the descendants of Thiruchangode, Karur, Erode and Coimbatore are also joined as members, the bye law was amended to include the people from Kongu Naadu. Also changed the name as Persatuan Kebajikan Namakkal Malaysia(Malaysia Namakkal Welfare Association). Now it has 16 active branches in the West Malaysia with more than 10,000 members.
Among other activities such as Family Day, Kootu Prarthanai, Annual Blood donation campaign etc, the association organizes Manavar Vizha for students who have excelled in their studies, giving interest free loans to the needy students who are pursuing higher educations and Educational guide lines to the students.
The association provide financial assistance for those affected by natural disaster such as Tsunami, earth quake, flood victims and also supporting the orphanage/disabled homes etc.
Central Working Comittee (CWC)
The CWC consists of 12 elected members ie:The President, Deputy President, 2 Vice President, Hon. Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, 5 Members and 2 represntative(usually the Branch Chairman and Branch Secretay)from each branch.
